ABOUT
Foluso Oguntoye is visual artist born in Lagos Nigeria, 1994, currently living and working in London, UK.
He is deeply drawn to land, nature, and plant life, and has developed a long-standing, experiential relationship with the natural world through work as a plantsman and gardener. This ongoing engagement continues to deepen their curiosity for nature, plant forms and their deepr significance that directly informs both their artistic practice and their desire to merge horticultural knowledge with their art practice
His work is an imaginative exploration of the rhythms and patterns encoded in nature—particularly plant forms—creating visionary landscapes that function as portals into inner and higher worlds. Through these imagined scapes, the artist reflects on the past, responds to the present, and imagines futures grounded in ecological balance and cultural and spiritual continuity. At its core, the practice seeks to reaffirm the intrinsic bond between humans and the living world, especially in a time of increasing alienation and disconnection from nature and its processes.
He studies plants and natural systems directly, the seen and unseen worlds of tropical, indigenous plant life, forests, and landscapes, drawing from observation, imagination, memory, and research, alongside their cultural and spiritual contexts. His work is deeply informed by his Yoruba heritage, particularly its cosmology, spiritual systems and philosophies, where nature is intrinsic. Currently seeking deeper connections between plant life and Yoruba spirituality, with a specific interest in the role of plants within divination practices, He uses these observations to mirror and translate inner human experience into new worlds, portraits, and symbolic environments that explore questions of existence, sustainability and the future.
Working with acrylic paint, oil pastels, drawing, collage, and printmaking, the Foluso constructs mystical, surreal forest-worlds inhabited by nature spirits—often embodied as feminine, anthropomorphic vessels and gourds. His stories, ideas and references continue to evolve along this thread.
